How Women Become Evil

How do we protect women from becoming evil? To not indulge their worst inclinations and become a monster, in particular, the devouring mother?
To de-humanize someone is to negate their agency and there is nothing that quite dehumanizes women as a culture that excuses a woman even for the crime of murdering her own children. But the dignity of volition requires the possibility of guilt. On January 24, 2023, Lindsay Clancy fatally strangled her three babies to death with an exercise band during the half hour that her husband was away getting groceries. Though we can perhaps begin to accept the existence of one evil and insane woman, it is much more difficult to accept how thousands of ordinary mothers responded to this tragedy: they defended her.
Why? It is statistically unlikely for them all to be insane and evil. What pernicious idea has infected them and how? When the most basic of moral questions are answered wrong by many people at the same time, it is likely that the viciousness that informs this wrong answer can and will touch our own lives too. Lindsay Clancy, then, is not a unique case, but rather a canary in the coal-mine of something more serious that has happened to the modern western woman, and something which we must work swiftly and efficiently to remedy, if primarily for the sake of the children they will harm otherwise.
